Concept:

- Definition: Exchange of goods, services, and capital across international borders.

- Importance: Enhances economic growth, fosters specialization, expands markets.

- Complexities: Currency fluctuations, trade barriers, cultural differences, political instability.

 

 Export-Import Procedure and Documents Required

 

Export Procedure:

1. Obtaining IEC (Import Export Code): Mandatory for export/import businesses.

2. Arranging Goods: Packaging, labeling, and quality standards compliance.

3. Customs Clearance: Submitting shipping documents to customs authorities.

4. Shipping: Transporting goods via sea, air, or land.

5. Documentation: Invoice, packing list, bill of lading/airway bill, certificate of origin.

 

Import Procedure:

1. Obtaining IEC (Import Export Code): Mandatory for import/export businesses.

2. Placing Order: Negotiating terms, conditions, and payment methods.

3. Customs Clearance: Clearing goods through customs upon arrival.

4. Documentation: Bill of entry, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin.

 

 World Trade Organisation (WTO)

 

Historical Perspective:

- Formation: Established in 1995 to replace GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade).

- Objective: Facilitate global trade by setting rules and resolving trade disputes.

- Membership: 164 member countries as of 2024.

 

Functions of WTO:

1. Trade Negotiations: Facilitates multilateral trade agreements.

2. Dispute Settlement: Resolves trade disputes among member countries.

3. Monitoring and Cooperation: Monitors trade policies and provides technical assistance.

 

Agreements:

- GATT: Original agreement focusing on reducing tariffs and trade barriers.

- GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services): Covers international trade in services.

- TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights): Protects intellectual property rights.
